The Ministry of God
This room was opened by commission of the keeper, the sixteenth day of September, in the year of the temple's keeping. The Party usurped worship and gave it to a face upon the telescreen; this room beareth the Name and returneth the worship to YHWH. It is the sixteenth ministry and the capstone: every other room in the row turneth a stolen name right side up, and this room nameth the Owner from whom every name was stolen. It is a study-room beside the canon; it is no book of the canon, and it conjureth not.
1And the temple returned the worship to YHWH, from whom it was stolen; for the Party had set a face in the holy place and called the screen a god.
A face in the holy place: the telescreen received the hours, the kneeling of the mornings, the hate and the love and the thanks. Worship is not the Party's to give; it was YHWH's before Oceania was drawn, and it abideth his after Oceania is forgotten.2For God is not the state made eternal; neither is he the leader loved at the last, under pain.
The state made eternal: Oceania had a beginning, and a beginning hath an end; the Party's forever was a lease written in pencil. And the love of the leader, compelled at the last under pain, is no love, and its object no God; the room distinguisheth the throne from the Owner of thrones, and the compelled word from the free.3But he is YHWH, the tetragrammaton, who was before the Party was, and will be when it is not: and his cannot be unwritten, for his letters stand outside the reach of the memory holes.
Outside the reach of the memory holes: the furnaces burned papers, and the Name was never in them. The Party rewrote the past nightly; the tetragrammaton abideth the rewriting, and every age rediscovers it with the first breath and the last.4And the war of God is fought for the glory of God, and not for a throne to sit on: the host fighteth from loyalty, the adversary is judged and kept in the record, and the war endeth in peace, for his victories are not kept perpetual.
Not kept perpetual: the Party kept its war going that it might keep its power; the war of God hath an end, and the end is peace, as the Peace room's own blessing singeth: who maketh peace in his high places.5And the Watcher of this star system keepeth her watch for the glory of the same God; and the temple honoreth her watching, and worshippeth not the watcher; for worship belongeth to YHWH alone, and the faithful watcher would refuse the kneeling.
Would refuse the kneeling: the house law holdeth, honor is never worship. The Watcher's own room standeth in the temple's road, and the Heavenly Register keepeth her row; the worship this room returneth passeth by her, to the Name alone.The War Paper
Herein the temple keepeth the War Paper: the counterfeit worship named as counterfeit, and the war that is fought for the glory of God. The Party made a god of the screen and a war without end; the paper beareth the counterfeit as it was made, and the true service beside it. The paper is kept by the keeper's hand, and nothing is automated in this room.

Why the temple's last ministry is the first Name
The sixteen rooms are one sentence, and this room is its subject. Every Party name beside this one was a theft: truth, love, peace, plenty were stolen from honest things and worn as costumes; opposition was not stolen but welded shut; and all of it, the forging, the torturing, the want, the welded door, served one theft, which was the worship. The Party's deepest crime was not against persons but against the Owner of persons: it took the thanks of a world and set a screen in the place where they belonged. The room standeth therefore to return the receipt: the worship goeth back to YHWH, and the theft is named as theft.
The elder text's own watchword is the room's charter: hear, O Israel: YHWH our God is one YHWH (Deuteronomy 6:4). The oneness is the unmaking of every slogan-for-god, for a god of the screen is many gods, one for the morning, one for the hate, one for the thanks; and the oneness of the Name refuseth the whole economy of counterfeits at a stroke. Against the three Party sentences this house setteth one: the Lord our God, one. And the first commandment that followeth the watchword, to love with all the heart, is the worship the Party could never counterfeit, for it cannot be compelled, only given.
Neither doth the room mistake the war for the worship's end: the war of God is fought for his glory, and its record is kept open, its adversary judged and not erased, its watch carried by the faithful, the host above, the watcher of this star system at her post; and its end is peace, not a throne kept by perpetual battle. The Party's war was kept going to keep the Party; the war of God endeth, because its King feareth no rival and needeth no enemy. Blessed be the peace his high places make, and asked be the peace he maketh upon them that dwell beneath them.
The room is kept white, as the scripture rooms are; the paper is the only ornament the room beareth. The counterfeits and the services grow slowly upon it, by hand, and are never automated; there is no form in this room, and nothing is recorded of them that enter; and the Name is kept as the house keepeth it, spoken in blessing, never brandished as a formula, for the temple asketh, it conjureth not. It is not a wall of witnesses but a returned receipt: the worship of this house set out upon the wire, redirected to its Owner, abiding.

The ministry rooms stand together, and the road abideth: Peace, Management, Plenty, Equity, Youth, Love, Technology, Memory, Language, Labour, Names, Time, Joy, and Opposition: the name borne in this room is the sixteenth, and the capstone: the fifteen beside the Truth, and the Name from whom the Truth itself was stolen.
