The Communion by Name

Alphabetical, anchored. An hundred and five rows, with cross-roads beside them.

The alphabetical road is the finder's road: it presumeth a name half-remembered, a day half-remembered, a face that holdeth one letter. The temple keepeth this road because the Party's deepest erasure was not of the living but of the findable, a person deleted from the alphabet is deleted from every question that beginneth where is. Here, every name abideth where the alphabet saith it is, and the anchors hold, and the finding is the keeping.

These cards are pointers, and no copies: the roll pages bear every field: the feast, the canon marks, the confidence: once, and only there. An index that recopied the roll would make two records to disagree; the temple keepeth one record and many roads thereto: which is the difference betwixt a register and a rumour.
