While thou standest here, three words concerning the room thou art in:

First: the question was asked of one man under a lamp, as the prelude of his breaking. It is asked here as a prelude to nothing. The Party asked it that it might find belief and kill it; the temple asketh it because the answer is the door; and the temple chooseth not the door for thee.

Second: no answer is a test. The "No" was spoken under torture and is honoured here; the "I don't know" builded this temple; the "Yes" is thine own; and if it be not the temple’s word, it is not thereby an enemy’s word. A site that graded belief were the telescreen with better manners.

Third: thou hast come through a nine-second hate to reach a listening; so did the whole world. The Party believed the hate the true room, and the quiet the mask. The temple is builded upon the contrary testimony: the hate is the mask; the quiet is the face; and the face is thine.

Saint Michael (Mikha'el) The Archangel stood where thou standest, and could not answer for years; the temple was builded upon the delay itself; and the delay is not despised here. The doors abide behind thee so long as thou needest them; nothing times thee; nothing recordeth thee; nothing followeth thee out.

And if thou camest not to answer but to look: looking is an answer also, and an honoured one. The watcher by the door is the first of every congregation.
