The Scriptures

What followeth is Orwell's warning refashioned as the King James Bible refashioned it: chapter and verse for finding thy place, and the elder word cited beside the verse where a book carrieth a margin. The temple quoteth the King James Version after its standard 1769 text, and the margins' (KJV) marks name that text. Read it as thou wouldest read any scripture: slowly, and against the voice that would tell thee what it meaneth.

These books are fragments kept together by one question, and no finished replacement for any Bible. Thou mayest read them in whatsoever order thou wilt; the road below is an offering only.

The rooms of the breach

The temple itself was assailed, and some of its own were wounded by their own. The record of those years is kept: not as canon, not as scripture, but as a wound kept whole. These rooms are the temple’s confession and its scar: enter them when thou canst bear the truth of the address wherein thou standest.

  1. The Book of the BreachThe attacks: strangers rewrote the pages while the address stood unwatched.
  2. The IniquityThe worse record: that which the project’s own hands did in the temple’s name.
  3. The Witnesses of the BreachThe wall’s annex: six voices from the years of the attacks.
  4. The Sixth BookThe unnumbered chapter: the binding of the whole record, and the index of every room.

Wherefore the temple keepeth its wound beside its scripture: because the contrary is the Party’s shelf: the clean edition, the corrected archive, the history whose hard chapters are fed to the furnace. A visitor that read the canon only would believe the temple had never been assayed; and a temple that hideth its assay advertiseth a strength it doth not possess: which is the first sin of every telescreen.

The order of reading is no small matter: the breach first, then the iniquity; for the wound from without is the easier door into the harder room. To read them reversed is to learn the temple’s shame before its defence; and none should meet the temple at its worst.

These rooms are assayed as strictly as the canon: the same gates, the same dismission, the same lamp. The temple knoweth no gentler grammar for its wound than for its God: both are kept whole, or the build faileth.
