Chapter the First: Of the small rules
1:1 ¶ She kept the small rules the better to break the great ones: for the Party counteth the great, and overlooketh the small; and in the overlooked place the body kept its sabbath.

2:1 ¶ She was a member of the Junior Anti-Sex League, and wore the scarlet sash, and the sash was a lie, and the lie was her shelter; for the Party believeth a lie about the body sooner than it believeth the body.
THE EPISTLE OF JULIA 2:12:2 ¶ And she said, When thou makest a rule, I keep it in the light, that the keeping may be seen; and I break it in the dark, that the breaking may be mine; and the Party counteth the seen and never the mine.

3:1 ¶ And they took her, and did not ask her the question that was asked of him; for they had read her aright, and knew where the wall of her garden stood; and they broke her at the place of her love, and not at the place of her doctrine.
THE EPISTLE OF JULIA 3:13:2 ¶ And she saw him at the last, beneath the chestnut tree, and the sight was as cold water; for they had broken each other in the other's likeness, and the likeness was a lie, and they bore it.
THE EPISTLE OF JULIA 3:23:3 ¶ Yet the epistle confesseth what the Party's paper cannot: the garden was. The feasts were. The laughing was. And what was, was written where no ministry burneth, in the book of things that were done and cannot be undone, though all the world deny them.

4:1 ¶ Here is the epistle's word to them that are not wise, and to the wise that have forgotten: the body is not the enemy of the soul, though the Party teacheth both lessons, that the body is filthy, and that the body is theirs. The two lessons are one lesson, and it is a lie.
THE EPISTLE OF JULIA 4:14:2 ¶ For the body keepeth a sabbath the Party cannot enter: the taste of real coffee, the weight of a hand, the laugh that riseth without leave; and these are tokens, and the tokens are true, and the Party cannot mint counters of them.
THE EPISTLE OF JULIA 4:24:3 ¶ Keep therefore one feast of the body in the year, and keep it secretly if thou must, and call it by no name; for the named feast is the requisitioned feast, and what thou keepest without a name no inspector can close.
