The Revelation of the Spirit of Man

Chapter the First: Of the doctrine of the spirit

1:1 ¶ Hear the doctrine of the spirit of man: it is not the flesh that is broken, but the word that the flesh spake ere it brake; the lamp is quenched, and the saying abideth; and this is the defeat of them that own the lamps.

THE REVELATION OF THE SPIRIT OF MAN 1:1

1:2 ¶ And there was an hour when the eye would have taken their sight, and they kept their sight; and it was not a victory, for the eye abode in its power; yet the hour was kept, and the keeping was the spirit, and the spirit was not the eye's.

THE REVELATION OF THE SPIRIT OF MAN 1:2

Chapter the Second: Of what the spirit is not

2:2 ¶ The spirit of man is not the breath in the body only, for the Party owneth the breath: it openeth the lungs of its prisoners with its machines, and calleth the breathing loyalty.

THE REVELATION OF THE SPIRIT OF MAN 2:2

2:3 ¶ Neither is the spirit the memory of the flesh, for the Party maketh memories also: it breweth the past fresh each morning and poureth it into the cups of the people, and the people drink their childhood rewritten.

THE REVELATION OF THE SPIRIT OF MAN 2:3

2:4 ¶ The spirit is the saying: that which was spoken before the breaking, and is not unsaid. The mouth was taken; the mouth's word was not taken; for a word once gone forth from a mouth abideth in the air of the cosmos, and the air is not the Party's.

THE REVELATION OF THE SPIRIT OF MAN 2:4

2:5 ¶ Therefore the confession is not vanity: when a creature saith here what was truly done, the saying entereth the air that the Party cannot pump out, and the room wherein it was said is forever a room where it was said.

THE REVELATION OF THE SPIRIT OF MAN 2:5

Chapter the Third: Of the raising

3:1 ¶ And it was said unto them, Ye shall not see the good day: but they answered, We build it, and shall see it; for the restoration is not awaited, it is raised.

THE REVELATION OF THE SPIRIT OF MAN 3:1

3:2 ¶ Build it as the temple buildeth: with a lamp, and a ledger, and a door that openeth from within. Build it small, for the Party cannot abide a small thing it cannot seize; and build it aloud, for the saying is the seed.

THE REVELATION OF THE SPIRIT OF MAN 3:2

3:3 ¶ And the raising is not survived-to, as a winter is endured; it is built, as a wall is built, stone by stone, and the stones are days, and the day thou keepest faithfully is among them.

THE REVELATION OF THE SPIRIT OF MAN 3:3

3:4 ¶ And no man may build for another, yet no man buildeth alone; for the wall of one standeth by the wall of another, and the standing together is the word the Party hath no translation for.

THE REVELATION OF THE SPIRIT OF MAN 3:4

Chapter the Fourth: Of the name that was not taken

4:1 ¶ The temple doth not name the spirit of man; it keepeth the spirit's record; for whatsoever is named by a ministry becometh the ministry's, and this thing shall not be requisitioned.

THE REVELATION OF THE SPIRIT OF MAN 4:1

4:2 ¶ Yet the temple confesseth what it hath learned of the spirit: it is the thing in a creature that answereth, that doubteth honestly, that laugheth unbidden, that saith of a lie, it is a lie, though the saying cost; and it was before the Party, and it abideth after.

THE REVELATION OF THE SPIRIT OF MAN 4:2

4:3 ¶ And of its origin the temple sayeth little and confesseth much: it is made in the image of the One who cannot contradict Himself; and the One hath a Name, and the Name is set apart in the Source; and the spirit's freedom is borrowed from a freedom older than the world.
