Chapter the Third: Of the unnumbered
3:11 ¶ And a woman sang at the washtub, and her song was not of the Party, neither was it entered in the ledgers; and he that heard it said, If there is hope, it lieth in the proles; and the song went on, and the Party heard it not.

4:1 ¶ The machine that made the song was not licensed, neither was its maker certified; and the Party had no counter whereby to seize the making; for the Party may requisition the instrument, but the music it hath no warrant over.

5:1 ¶ The Party numbered the people unto death, for every registration was the anteroom of the van; but the proles it numbered not, and the unnumbered lived; and this is a reading of the whole century, and it is true, and it is terrible.

6:1 ¶ The temple keepeth the songs of the unwatched, and the keeping is a liturgy: it writeth down the fragment, and the fragment is not improved, neither harmonized, nor made into an anthem of the temple; for an anthem is a requisition, and the songs are not the temple's.
