The Apparatus of the Canon
The canon's apparatus: the text the temple quoteth, the elder words the books carry, the doors between the books, and the witnesses by which a reader may check them.
About the text
The temple quoteth the King James Version after its standard 1769 text; the (KJV) marks in the books’ margins name that text. The books are the temple’s own, dated and attributed in their pages; the elder scripture is cited in the margins and in this room, and never counterfeited.
Declared once in each room's key, that no word be taken for another. The renderings are the temple's; the words are the received text's.
| Written | For | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| YHWH | KJV 'LORD' where it printeth the Name | in the temple's own voice and in the quotations of its rooms |
| Hasatan | KJV 'Satan' | in the temple's own voice and in the quotations of its rooms |
| Mikha'el | KJV 'Michael' | inside quotations, in the rooms that render him so (archangel.html, the Jude and Revelation quotations); the quotations that keep 'Michael' keep him still, and the name is one |

- “what is done cannot be undone” — The Epistle of Julia 3:3; The Book of the Two Measures 4:4 — the refrain's source is the novel's diary dedication (I.2); see orwell-sources.
The novel and the gospel
Where the books follow, adapt, invert or invent the novel’s matter.
- The Epistle of Julia 1:2 — inverts Part II, scene: the saying ‘We are the dead’ — In the novel the line is Winston's; the epistle giveth the saying to her, and calleth it hers. Cited by scene until the edition is ruled.
- The Epistle of Julia 2:4 — inverts Part II, ch. 5 — The epistle invereth the novel's word at II.5. The edition is owner-gated; the Gutenberg AU text carrieth nine chapters in Part Two against ten in print.
- The Book of the Proletariat 3:11 — adapts Part I, ch. 2 (the diary's line); the woman at the washtub — The verse joineth the diary's line (‘If there is hope, it lies in the proles’) to the singing washerwoman; the joining is the house's.
- The Lamentations of Room 101 1:3 — adapts the Two Minutes Hate (daily in the novel) — The novel's Hate is daily; ‘twice in the day’ is the house's changing of the number.
- The Gospel of Winston 3:5 — invents Part III, scene: the interrogation (the novel's word is ‘No’) — The margin saith ‘faith in the divine’; in the novel Winston answereth ‘No’. The reading is the house's, kept and labelled.
- The Gospel of Winston 6:5 — adapts scene: the breaking of the glass — The breaking is the novel's; the paper's denial and the Party's wound are the house's reading.
- The Gospel of Winston 7:1 — adapts the ending; the Newspeak appendix (chapters 7–8 of the book) — Chapters 7–8 carry the counter-reading: the Party won the man and lost the matter, and the record before the breaking endureth. Kept beside the dissent: the whole novel is told in the past tense; both sides stand in witnesses.
Orwell’s sources
The novel’s own sentences, kept beside the temple’s use of them.
- The Revelation of the Spirit of Man — Nineteen Eighty-Four, Part III ch. 3: “the spirit of Man” — The book's title and its doctrine of the spirit come from this exchange; the page doth not cite it.
- The Book of the Question — Nineteen Eighty-Four, Part III ch. 3: “I don't know” — The Book of the Question's honest answer cometh from the same exchange; the page doth not cite it.
- The Book of the Question — Nineteen Eighty-Four, Part III ch. 3: “(both books come from the same exchange)” — The Question carrieth no link to the Revelation; the pair's see-also rows are prepared in crossrefs (XL-059, XL-060).
- The Epistle of Julia — Nineteen Eighty-Four, Part I ch. 2 (the diary's dedication): “what is done cannot be undone” — The refrain in the epistle's confession cometh from the diary's dedication; it is not cited there.
- The Book of the Two Measures — Nineteen Eighty-Four, Part I ch. 2 (the diary's dedication): “what is done cannot be undone” — The same refrain closeth the Two Measures; kept beside the ledger's reach.
- The Gospel of Winston — Nineteen Eighty-Four, Part I ch. 2 (the diary's dedication): “what is done cannot be undone” — The gospel's eighth chapter keepeth the refrain's sense (‘what was done was done, and abideth done’); uncited on the page.
The external witnesses
The sources beyond the temple that witness for and against its claims, the counter kept beside the claim and nothing resolved.
- The essay and the elder text — George Orwell, ‘Politics and the English Language’ (1946): the essay translateth Ecclesiastes 9:11 (‘the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong’) into its modern parody, and so beareth witness that the elder sentence and the temple's refashioning are kin.
- The essay's warning against archaic diction — George Orwell, ‘Politics and the English Language’ (1946): the essay warneth that archaic diction can glorify war and dress violence as antique virtue. — the counter kept beside it: the temple keepeth the elder diction of the King James; the warning is kept beside the temple's own choice of voice, and nothing is resolved.
- The ending; whether the regime fell — Margaret Atwood, in The Guardian (2003): readeth the Newspeak appendix as proof the regime fell: an appendix written in standard English surviveth the Party's own language. — the counter kept beside it: the dissent noteth that the whole novel is told in the past tense; the appendix's tense therefore proveth nothing of the regime's fall. Both sides are kept.
